Fabulous Twain Quote

“Adam was but human—He did not want the apple for the apple’s sake, he wanted it only because it was forbidden. The mistake was in not forbidding the serpent; then he would have eaten the serpent.”

-Mark Twain, Pudd’n-head Wilson

One Word provides 60 seconds of...

One Word (oneword.com) provides 60 seconds of...awesomeness! Essentially you click on the "go" button and it transfers you to a page with only one word and a 60 second timer. You have no time to think, you just write whatever comes to mind. Then, you submit and get to see what everyone else came up with. Pretty dang nifty!

Perfect

"But words are things, and a small drop of ink,
Falling like dew, upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think;"

                                                                   -Don Juan by Lord Byron

Some Tips from Twitter@Advice to Writers

Characteristics of a good story:
  • A single theme, clearly defined
  • A well developed plot
  • Style: vivid word pictures, pleasing sounds and rhythm
  • Characterization
  • Faithful to source
  • Dramatic appeal
  • Appropriateness to listeners
Adapting to our audiences:
  1. Take the story as close to them as you can.
  2. Keep it brief and simple
  3. Stimulate their senses so they feel, smell, touch and listen and see vivid pictures.
  4. Describe the characters and settings, and help them sympathize with the character’s feelings.
  5. Aim your story at the less experienced when telling to a mixed audience

So...I won...why am I not happy about it?

Well, I won the pseudo contest for receiving the Academic Excellence Award. Winning is great...right? Why don't I feel great about it?

Here are the quandaries (that's a lovely word is it not?) that might be hindering my pleasure in this win.........

A) Do I really deserve it?

Eeeehhhhh!!!! and Don Juan....

Lewis Carroll came up with the totally awesome word "chortle"!!!! OMG ^_____^
If you don't know what chortle means... really, how could anyone not know... but, just in case you have been stuffed down a rotting log for your entire life, it's a crossbetween a chuckle and a snort.

Also, if you've never read Don Juan, do it...now! It's a conversation you"ll really enjoy!

A quick review of the first day for a few of my classes....

My College Algebra class was at 8am. I have Mr. Frank Hendrick, who apparently receives mixed reviews, as my instructor. I think he's great! He has a pleasing voice and  smiles a lot. If  you are teaching something  I suck at then you could at least give an encouraging smile ever so often. It  also helps that he is a male and I  seem to learn math better when presented by guys. Strange? Not really, look it up. Apparently my math brain functions more like a male's than a female's. Females can be just as awesome in math, but the female brain tends to process it differently, which effects how they teach it to others, etc.

My British Literature II class great, as expected. Dr. Grace Wilson is as wonderful as always. I am unfortunately already annoyed with my classmates (especially the idiot-wonder behind me). Ugh! I am super excited about the selections in the book

A brand newish sort of semester....

It's official...I've gone nutsy! I am running at 20 credit hours.
  • British Literature II
  • American Literature II
  • Women's Literature
  • College Algebra (again--that's right, I failed it)
  • Voice For Performance
  • Psychology of Personality

I am scheduled to graduate in the spring and I haven't:
  • Applied for the college I'm transfering to
  • Appllied for financial aid
  • Applied for any scholarships
I feel so completely unprepared...there should really be people that you can pay to take care of these smaller details for you. Blargh!!!
